storm's track. hi, there. we are off to a cold and rainy start in washington temperature snowflakes are as close in as northern montgomery county. far western parts of loudon county. snowflakes around dulles airport right now. accumulating snows out towards the mountains of west virginia. temperatures in town were holding on to barely 40 degrees at national airport. but much milder alongside the bay. bay water and ocean water temperatures are really mild because it is after all still october. but once you get away from the moderating influence of the water temperatures down to the freezing mark. winter storm warnings remain in effect for all those bright shaded counties in pink there that does include loudon county, out towards the blue ridge, winchester, all up into the panhandle of west virginia, also in maryland, carol, frederick, washington, all under the winter storm warning through the

remainder of the day today. winter weather advisories for montgomery, fairfax and prince william counties. there's a well defined snow line west of interstate 95. that's where the rain/snow line is going to stay for much of the day. the ground is white now up towards maryland. white ground for sure. several inches-snow has added up towards the blue ridge. the end of the precipitation is now in far southwestern virginia. we'll be keeping a close eye on this through the remainder of the day. total snow accumulation potentials today. as much as six to nine inches in a few spots west of interstate 81. about four to six inches on average. that stretch will go up to parts of northern frederick county as well. two to four inches central and northern montgomery county out towards dulles airport. maybe an inch on the grass. the closer to the metro area and

down into portions of southern maryland and along the bay side, not much if anything on the way of accumulations. roadbeds are warm, the snow will come down hard enough to cover the roads and make them slushy for a time. temperatures below freezing could make a slippery start first thing tomorrow morning as well. we'll keep you posted all day long in the storm center. >> watch that speed if you plan on hitting the pavement. we're going to check in with kim. what is going on out there? >> reporter: i am prepared and chuck bell is right on track with this forecast. we had so much heavy rain this morning that the roads for the most part are mostly wet. i am in clarksburg, maryland. you can see the sign for 270 north right over my shoulder. this area we saw the changeover to snow rather quickly. it has been raining all morning. you can see the roads are a little slippery. they're wet on the pavement, but not snow covered.

you can see the cars coming by have snow on them. as for the roads themselves, they're okay. now take a walk this way, you can see the grass and there's snowplow driver, the grass has the snow. this snow has a high water content to it. when you try to shovel it it's going to be like mashed potat s potatoes. very heavy and hard on your back. take it easy. even our signs here have the snow stick. right across the road over there that is where all the salts to keep your roads clear and easy for you is being housed here in upper montgomery county. one thing i want to point out is take a look at the trees. they're still starting to peak with the fall foliage. there's lots of leaves on the trees. this heavy, high water content snow sticking to trees and limbs. that's going to be bad news for some of the areas in the winter storm warning that's going to weigh down the trees. we could see some tree limbs and tree branchs fall, so not so

great for folks in frederick county and off to the west where we have the winter storm warning. but as for now, the snow's coming down at a pretty good clip. it is very sticky. so far the roads are in good shape in upper montgomery county. we'll send id back inside the warm studio. >> have you noticed drivers taking heed of the warning? >> so far the roads we have not witnessed any accidents. luckily this morning as we were driving north it was all wet. as soon as we got west of frederick and i-70 we ent up in elevation to 975 feet, quickly changed right over to snow. and that's where we saw all the snowplow drivers really coating the roads. i think the roads and maryland department of transportation doing a great job staying ahead of this storm. >> kim staying on top of it out in montgomery county. thank you very much.

>> pepco says it's keeping an eye on the storm and is ready to respond. the utility company has been dogged by complaints in the past for prolonged power outages after the storms says it's preparing for outages once again. they say heavy weight snow could weigh down the trees and cause branchs to fall on to lines. >> we're looking at a possible wet snow. we have leaves on the branchs. branchs are going to be leaning on some of the power lines. hopefully the tree trimming that we've done, this snow will show the work that we're doing. >> they have scheduled additional crews to work throughout the storm and there will be more folks on call to help restore power if there are widespread outages. if you're unfortunate enough to lose power, jot this number down, 1-877-pepco-62. it will prove to come in handy. along the northeast people

are gearing up for today's major snowstorm. home sploi stores were scrambling to keep shelves stocked with ice melt and shovels. winter coats and snow blowers were also hot items. municipal crews were gearing up making sure their snowplow equipment is ready to go. make sure to stay right here for news 4 with the latest on this unusual october snowstorm. you can get updates any time on our website nbcwashington.com. in other news, after missing for a week in the woods, search crews have rescued an 8-year-old virginia boy. the boy wandered away from his parents last weekend while hiking in north battlefield park. news 4's jackie benson has more on the boy's journey and the celebration of his return. >> no one on the team ever gave up and i have to say that there was sometimes that you just had to reach down and find that faith that you were going to

find him and whether it's appropriate or not for everyone, there is a god. he listens to prayer. and prayers were answered. >> reporter: it was an emotional, joyful end to week of searching for 8-year-old robert wood junior. with cold weather coming, it didn't look good for the little boy. he's autistic and cannot speak. he was found about 2:00 p.m. curled in the fetal position near a creek in the martin mare yet ta quarry. about a mile from where he disappeared during a walk with his family on sunday. one could only imagine the boy's fear during a long, scary nights in the woods. yet doctors at vcu medical center in richmond say he's doing very well despite being exposed to the elements. >> when he first arrived, he was looking at us. he was surprisingly cooperative with all of the evaluations that we're performing. and as i said when he first saw

his mother he looked at her and smiled. that was very heartwarming. >> reporter: about 6,000 people took part in the search. some gathered near the scene afterward to give thanks for the outcome. >> it was tough going. we had a lot behind us. we had a lot in front of us. we had a lot, but god was with us all the way. >> reporter: robert's father released a statement. robert is a very strong and determined little boy. we never gave hope that he would come home safe. thank you so much everybody. robert is home. robert wood junior will remain here at vcu medical center for another few days and then it is home to his nice warm bed. amazing to see that story had such a happy ending. >> and they had so many people who wanted to volunteer and help with that search. they had to turn some people away. it looks like the people they

you're watching news 4 today. you are taking a live look outside of d.c. can't really make it out because it is so just dreary out there. the rain is just coming down in parts of our area. other parts it is snowing right now. unbelievable what we are seeing here in october. >> need a little bit of windex to wipe that camera lens off to see outside. we heard earlier from tom and chuck bell confirmed that this

is the first time since 1979, 32 years that we've had snowfall in october. pretty amazing stuff. we are getting pictures into our newsroom everywhere from ashburn to out in west virginia, frederick county as well where snow is covering some cars. a lot of places people are telling us that that snow is turning into a sleet and snow mix. they've been out on the roads. it's very slick out there. we want to remind everybody if you have to go somewhere out today, factor in a couple extra minutes for the ride. take it easy. >> if you don't have to go out, this might be a great day to catch up on that book you've been putting off. >> make some dumplings as one of the viewers said. >> right now thousands of people are gathering on and around freedom plaza for the annual aids walk washington. >> nbc 4 is a proud sponsor of this year's event.

serve every year. >> david, we talk about there's still so far to go with this, when we look back at 25 years we truly have made some significant progress. there's a reason why people are out there wearing their hats, sitting in the rain, moving forward trying to spread this message. if you were to talk about the strides we've made since the start of this walk, what would be some of those highlights? >> well at the start of this walk, diagnosis of hiv was followed by a quick diagnosis of aids and then death. today people can live, happy, normal productive lives by adhering to their medications and taking good care of themselves. we have hope of a vaccine or treatment around the corner. and it's going to take time and it's going to take money. >> we talked about the rain. we talked about the weather. what is the plan here for the walk today? >> we are about to step off. i believe we have some elected

you're watching news 4 today. starting today parents and students can see just how much college will cost. the obama administration passed a law to all colleges receiving federal aid must now install a price calculator on their websites by today. prospective students can figure out expenses in order to budget their money and figure out if they need financial aid. financial aid has lowered the cost of colleges by $6,000 in the most recent academic year. the white house is becoming a haunted house tonight as the first family gets into the halloween spirit. president obama is welcoming students from select area elementary schools for trick or treating. as you can see the white house has already been decorated for the event.

it's the third straight year the president has hosted the event at the white house which will be bathed in orange light for the occasion. i love that. >> i know. if you take a look behind us you can see a lot of the decor there on the front of the white house and the fall foliage. really makes it picturesque. >> a great time of year. add in some snow. >> and some candy bars. this morning we're talking about fashion for a cause. next week geeks from all walks of life will be made chic. >> here's mark from microsoft. thank you for joining us. >> you're welcome. >> tell us what is this event all about? >> it's a way to raise awareness ff nifty, it's a group that microsoft does a lot of work with. in short they train and mentor kids from underprivileged communities and teach them how to launch their own businesses. many of them go on to graduate from college and launch llcs and so on. >> this is the second year for this event.

it's also taking place in chicago as well. really this is a round up of some of the smartest guys and gals in our area who are probably used to a casual is king kind of dress code at work. a lot of them work behind computers or work with technology in some sort. so we can take a look at some pictures from last year. you guys really do this up. talk about the transformation we're seeing. >> microsoft is a big backer of nifty. and we round up frankly tech ceos and other people in the tech community who are mentors to kids that go through the nifty program. these are role models in the community and we round them up for bloomingdale's. they style them and put them on the runway. >> we're talking about forces with some pretty big names here, facebook. >> we are. we have andrew noiz from facebook. we have patrick bell who runs

gop labs for the republicans and house of representatives. we have people fund the public sector and private sector. they're all young tech leaders that are good role models for the kids that go through the nifty programs. >> you've got 20 so-called geeks. how do you choose them and do they mind the label? >> no one really minds the geek label in my experience. almost no one refuses me when i ask them to do this because it is for a good cause. it is quite a unique event. if you look at the different kinds of charity fashion shows or other fashion shows that have been in places like chicago and d.c., this is one of the more unusual ones. it ends up being a good time. we have some fun stuff happening at bloomingdale's with some of our technology. we have an after party. we make a five or six-hour event out of the experience. >> the guy was sporting some red leather shoes. how difficult is it to get them to throw in their flip-flops to change into something like that? >> one of our models this year

about the first weekend of october was cold and miserable. then three nice weekends in a row and now our fifth and final weekend of october you would think that we had jumped straight into the month of december out there cloudy skies, a cold rain in washington right now. and snowflakes flying out towards the blue ridge. here you can see it on our city camera view. rain drops on the city camera this morning. those would be snowflakes as close by as dulles international airport right now. up to haguerstown and martinsburg, west virginia all in the 30s with snow fall. at reagan airport 39 degrees. the wind is going to start to crank up later on this afternoon. look how cold it is. 34 in rockville. reston town center 35. leesburg, 34. all of those locations have made the change over to snow now. but once you go east of washington, temperatures are in the low to mid 40s, bay water

temperatures are in the upper 50s to near 60s. same story for the atlantic ocean. almost no chance of accumulating snow anywhere near those warm bodies of water. you get back to the west where temperatures are combining with the elevation to really stack up the snowflakes right now. winter storm warnings for all the pink shaded counties. winter weather advisories to the western sides of the d.c. metro. you can see it on radar basically where that pink to blue line was on the advisories. we'll zoom in closer. all rain on the capital beltway. we have weather watchers now reporting snowflakes and enough to cover the ground as well that's the case up towards the blue ridge into the panhandle of west virginia. one to two inches of snow on the ground already. the ground is real tiffly warm. the snow may come down at a fast enough clip to slushy up the roadways a little bit. the back end of the precip is down here across southwestern virginia. we're going to watch that very,

very carefully. this huge line of heavy rain along the coast is stealing a little bit of the moisture. but nonetheless so much cold air in place that we will get an accumulating snow north and west of town. here's our future cast model. low pressure racing off the east coast. all snow north and west. all rain south and east. the dividing line the basically going to be right along interstate 95. here we go on the micro cast model. we'll step you through the rest of the day. all rain around town. the pink that's where the snowflakes are mixing in by 6:30 this evening. there's a quick hit of snow in the washington area. the roads will be wet and warm. not expecting much in the way of accumulations right in town. all snow out to the west. mostly snow is close in as fairfax county. rain changing and ending as snow around town. snowfall amounts as much as six to nine inches out in the far west. four to six inches around to the west of the d.c. metro. one inch around to the western suburbs to about six inches further out from there.

you're watching nbc 4 washington's news leader. now live in hd. this is news 4 today. what happened to fall? taking a live look at i-70 in frederick, maryland, it appears winter has arrived before halloween. the question now, how much snow will we get? good morning. thank you for waking up with us. >> welcome to news 4 today on this saturday, october 29th. the snow already starting to come down in parts of maryland and virginia. >> across the region crews are ready to make sure the roads are clear. derek ward is live in alexandria at one facility where snowplow crews are gearing up for the winter storm. derek, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they've geared up and gotten out of here. you can see the salt dome behind me. we're at the facility at van dorn street just off of 395. as you can see back there,

there's not a lot of activity now, that doesn't mean that was a case earlier this morning. take a look at some of the video we shot when we first got here. there were some larger trucks out. those are the interstate vehicles. crews started coming on about midnight last night. before that they did some pretreating. that was in the western part of loudon county where there is less rain. it's less effective to pretreat when it's raining it will simply be washed away. but crews have left here now. they're going to be standing by on the interstates and heading out in the western area where they may need it a bit more. there's going to be about 230 trucks out through this incident and they're going to make sure that the roads are indeed passable. right now it's just a rain incident for us. that could change significantly as the temperatures drop later on. these crews have been very busy. they've been on since midnight. they're going to be on through the duration of this and

tomorrow we've got the marine corp. marathon. some of these same workers will be out and about blocking the ramps to the interstate for the runners. this is definitely the start of the busy season for these folks. and again, they've got about 230 crews that will be out at the ready. as we saw throughout the area some crews did some dry runs, can't call them dry anymore. they did some test runs. you might call this a dry run save for all of the rain that's falling now. luckily close in it's going to be a rain type incident. personally, if you're coming out and you have the option with the lining, wear the lining especially if you're out for a significant amount of time. back to you. >> thank you, derek. chuck bell, we had heard and john we had heard that a lot of trucks were prepared for construction. this was all snuck up on them. they had to attach the shovels real quick. a little bit of a surprise for

most-us in the area. nobody expects snowfall before the end of november around here. our first inch of snow comes in that first half of the month of december. obviously further out to the west sometimes late november. before halloween, that's early. no doubt about it. cold and wet. that's the way it's going to be today. good news for everybody who's going out to do the marine corp. marathon tomorrow. it will still be cold, but it won't be raining or snowing. temperatures for now in the 30s. 39 in washington. 34 degrees in leesburg. 33 in martinsburg, west virginia. winter storm watches are up for all those pink shaded counties. there you can see on the radar the snow is sticking to the ground now across northern and western maryland. even upper montgomery county west of leesburg, out to blue month, winchester, it's all sticking to the ground right now. right along i-95 it's still all in the form of rain. total accumulations before the last of the rain drops and

snowflakes come on through here, somewhere around one, three, to four inches in the western suburbs. you get out to the blue ridge four to six inches. might see six to nine inches in a few places. a cold, windy, rainy day today. inwood, west virginia, a white ground in the panhandle right now. same story in winchester. a slippery slide indeed with the snowflakes. more on the forecast coming up. >> thank you, chuck. tnchts trial of the woman accused of killing a co-worker at the bethesda lululemon store will resume on monday after finishing the week from dramatic testimony from workers at the apple store next door. one woman said she heard arguing and then heard cries of please help me. the other witness talked about hearing hysterical noises. neither witness offering an explanation for why they did not try to help. facebook is adding new security features to its website as it tries to thwart a growing number of attacks on users' pages.

facebook said that this week hackers using stolen user names tried to break into 600,000 accounts every day. the company says only a fraction of those attempts are successful. they're rolling out a new trusted friends program they say will help make it easier for people to restore access to their accounts. hopefully that will work. that's a staggering number every day. it is 9:38 right now. there is much more to come on news 4 today. >> up next, we're going to go back to freedom plaza and aids walk washington. people are braving the weather for a
